يعد كلاً من الغثيان والإقياء من العلامات والأعراض الشائعة التي يُمكن أن تنجم عن حالات عديدة. وينجم الغثيان والإقياء في أغلب الأحيان عن التهاب فيروسي يُصيب جهاز الهضم— ويُسمى بالخطأ الانفلونزا المعدة— أو غثيان الصباح (الوحام) خلال فترات الحمل المبكرة.

ويمكن أن تُؤدي العديد من الأدوية إِلى الغثيان والإقياء كما يُسبب ذلك أيضاً التخدير العام لدى الخضوع لعملية جراحية. وفي بعض الحالات النادرة قد يشير الغثيان والإقياء إِلى مشكلة صحية خطيرة، بل حتى إلى مشكلة تهدد الحياة.
