نتجم أغلب حالات ضيق التنفس عن مشاكل في القلب أو في الرئتين. يشترك القلب والرئتان في توصيل الأُوكسجين إِلى أنسجة الجسم وإزالة ثنائي أوكسيد الكربون، فتؤثر المشاكل في أي من هاتين العمليتين على تَنَفُسك.

يعود سبب ضيق التنفس الذي يأتي بشكل مفاجىء (يُعرف بالحاد) إلى عدد محدود من الأسباب بما فيها الآتي:

  1. التأق
  2. الربو
  3. التسمم بأول أكسيد الكربون
  4. اندحاس القلب (فرط السوائل حول القلب)
  5. داء الانسداد الرئوي المزمن (COPD)
  6. مرض فيروس كورونا المستجد 2019 (كوفيد-19)
  7. النوبة القلبية
  8. اضطراب نظم القلب (مشاكل عدم انتظام ضربات القلب)
  9. فشل القلب
  10. الالتهاب الرئوي (وغيرها من الالتهابات الرئوية)
  11. استرواح الصدر تقوّض الرئتين
  12. الانصمام الرئوي (خثار الدم في أحد شرايين الرئة)
  13. نزف الدم المفاجىء
  14. انسداد أعلى الممر الهوائي (انسداد الممر التنفسي)

في حال صعوبة التنفس التي تستمر لأسابيع أو أكثر (المُزمنة) تعود هذه الحالة في أغلب الأحيان إِلى الأسباب الآتية:

  1. الربو
  2. داء الانسداد الرئوي المزمن (COPD)
  3. زوال التَكَيُّف
  4. اختلال القلب الوظيفي
  5. داء الرئة الخلالي
  6. السمنة
  7. الانصباب الجنبي (تراكم السوائل حول الرئتين)

يُمكن أن تُصعِّب مجموعة من الحالات المرضية الأُخرى تنفس الهواء بكمية كافية. وتتضمن الأمثلة الآتي:
