إن المرحلة التي يكون فيها نقص الوزن غير المبرر مثيراً للمخاوف الطبية غير دقيقة. لكن يتفق العديد من الأطباء على ضرورة إجراء التقييم الطبي إِذا كان نقص الوزن لديك يزيد عن 5 بالمائة من وزنك خلال فترة تتراوح بين 6 أشهر إِلى سنة واحدة لاسيِّما لدى الأشخاص البالغين من فئة كبار السن. فعلى سبيل المثال يبلغ نقص الوزن الذي قدره 5 بالمائة لدى الشخص الذي يزن 160رطل (72 كيلوغرام) 8 أرطال (3.6 كيلوغرام). ولدى الشخص الذي يزن 200 رطل (90 كيلوغرام) يبلغ نقص الوزن 10 أرطال (4.5 كيلوغرام).

يتأثر وزنك بمقدار ما تتناوله من السعرات الحرارية ومستوى النشاط الجسدي والصحة بشكل عام والعمر ومدى امتصاص العناصر الغذائية والعوامل الاقتصادية والاجتماعية.
