إذا كنت تفقد الوزن من دون أن تسعى إلى ذلك ويساورك القلق بشأن هذا الأمر، فاستشر الطبيب. كقاعدة عامة، قد يشير فقدان أكثر من 5% من وزنك خلال 6 إلى 12 شهرًا إلى وجود مشكلة. وإذا كنت من كبار السن ومصابًا بحالات مرضية ومشكلات صحية أخرى، فقد يكون فقدان الوزن بمقدار ضئيل أمرًا مهمًا.

سيتعاون معك الطبيب لتحديد سبب فقدان الوزن. غالبًا ما سيبدأ معك بمناقشة شاملة للأعراض، والأدوية التي تتناولها، وصحتك العقلية والبدنية العامة، والحالات الطبية. ومن المحتمل أن يُجري لك فحصًا بدنيًا أيضًا.

ومن الممكن أيضًا أن يراجع الطبيب أي فحوصات سرطان حديثة قد تكون خضعت لها. وقد يتضمن ذلك فحص سرطان القولون، أو فحص الثدي وصورة الثدي الشعاعية، أو فحص البروستاتا. ويمكن أن يساعد ذلك على تحديد ما إذا كانت هناك حاجة إلى إجراء اختبارات إضافية.

قد يناقش الطبيب معك أيضًا أي تغيرات قد تكون طرأت على نظامك الغذائي أو شهيتك وعلى حاستي التذوق والشم. إذ يمكن أن تؤثر هذه الأمور على تناولك الطعام وعلى وزنك، وقد تكون مرتبطة ببعض الحالات الطبية.

وقد يطلب الطبيب إجراء اختبارات الدم والبول التي يمكن أن توفر معلومات حول صحتك العامة. وقد تُجري اختبارات أخرى بناءً على هذه النتائج. لا تُجرى عادةً فحوصات تصوير للبحث عن سرطانات خفية ما لم يكن هناك دليل آخر غير فقدان الوزن.

في بعض الأحيان، إذا لم يحدد التقييم الأساسي سببًا لحالتك، فستكون الخطوة التالية المعقولة هي الانتظار اليقظ لمدة تتراوح بين شهر و6 أشهر. وقد يقترح الطبيب التوقف عن اتباع أي نظام غذائي مقيد. وقد تحتاج إلى نظام غذائي خاص لمنع فقدان المزيد من الوزن أو لاستعادة الوزن المفقود. ويمكن للطبيب إحالتك إلى اختصاصي نظم غذائية يمكنه تقديم اقتراحات بشأن الحصول على سعرات حرارية كافية.
