بوجه عام، لا توجد فائدة من استخدام العسل بدلاً من السكر في البرنامج الغذائي الخاص بمرضى السكري. إذ يؤثر كل من العسل والسكر على مستوى السكر في الدم.

ونظرًا لأن نكهة العسل أحلى من السكر المحبب، يمكن استخدام كمية أقل من العسل بدلاً من السكر في بعض الوصفات. ولكن تجدر الإشارة إلى أن ملعقة صغيرة من العسل تحتوي فعليًّا على كمية أكبر قليلاً من الكربوهيدرات والسعرات الحرارية مقارنةً بما تحتويه ملعقة صغيرة من السكر المحبب. لذا، فأي كمية سعرات حرارية أو كربوهيدرات توفرها ستكون ضئيلة.

وبالتالي إذا كنت تفضل طعم العسل، يمكنك استخدامه. ولكن احرص فقط على تناول كميات معقولة منه. كما يجب حساب الكربوهيدرات الموجودة في العسل عند استخدامه كجزء من البرنامج الغذائي الخاص بمرضى السكري.
