بوجه عام، لا توجد فائدة من جعل العسل بديلاً عن السكر في خطة الأكل الخاصة بداء السكري. فكل من العسل والسكر سيؤثران على مستوى السكر في الدم.

يحتوي العسل على سكريات أكثر من السكر الحبيبي، وبالتالي يمكنك استخدام كمية أقل من العسل بدلاً من السكر لتحلية بعض الأكلات. ولكن ملعقة صغيرة من العسل في الواقع تحتوي على قدر أكبر قليلاً من الكربوهيدرات وقدر أكبر من السعرات الحرارية مما تحتويه ملعقة صغيرة من السكر الحبيبي — ولذا فأي كمية سعرات حرارية أو كربوهيدرات توفرها ستكون ضئيلة.

أما إذا كنت تفضل مذاق العسل، فابدأ مباشرة واستخدمه — ولكن بقدر معقول فقط. يجب حساب الكربوهيدرات الموجودة في العسل إذا كان جزءًا من خطة الأكل الخاصة بداء السكري.
