يوجد ارتباط وثيق بين الألم والاكتئاب. يمكن للاكتئاب أن يسبب الألم وكذلك يمكن أن يكون الألم سببًا في الاكتئاب. في بعض الأحيان، ينشأ عن الألم والاكتئاب حلقة مفرغة يؤدي فيها الألم إلى تفاقُم أعراض الاكتئاب؛ ومن ثم يُفاقِم الاكتئابُ الناتج عن ذلك الشعورَ بالألم.

بالنسبة للعديد من الأشخاص، يسبب الاكتئاب أعراضًا بدنية غير مفسرة الأسباب مثل ألم الظهر أو الصداع. وهذا النوع من الألم قد يكون العلامة الأولى أو الوحيدة للاكتئاب.
