عادةً ما يكون تناول مكملات اليود غير ضروري إذا كنت تعيش في الولايات المتحدة أو في معظم البلدان المتقدمة. يوصي بعض المتخصصين في الطب البديل بتناول أقراص اليود أو مكملات عشب البحر الغنية باليود للمصابين بقصور الغدة الدرقية. يحدث خمول الغدة الدرقية (قصور الغدة الدرقية) عندما لا ينتج جسمك ما يكفي من الهرمون الدرقي لتلبية احتياجات الجسم.

في واقع الأمر، قد يؤدي نقص اليود إلى الإصابة بقصور الغدة الدرقية. لكن نقص اليود مرض نادر في الولايات المتحدة والدول المتقدمة الأخرى بسبب إضافة اليود للملح (ملح اليود) والأطعمة الأخرى.

وإذا لم يكن قصور الغدة الدرقية ناتجًا عن نقص اليود، فلن تعود مكملات اليود بأي فائدة ولا ينبغي تناولها.
