وُيمكن أن يكون ألم المفصل على شكل توعك أو وجع أو التهاب ينشأ في أي جزء من أجزاء المفصل —بما في ذلك الغضروف أو العظم أو الأربطة أو الأوتار أو العضلات. لكن يُشير ألم المفصل في أغلب الحالات إِلى التهاب المفاصل أو إِلى ألم مفصلي، وهو عبارة عن التهاب أو ألم من داخل المفصل ذاته.

ويمكن أن يكون ألم المفصل خفيف بحيث أنه يُسبب الوجع فقط بعد القيام ببعض النشاطات، أو قد يكون شديد بحيث تؤدي حتى الحركة المحدودة مثل حمل وزن الجسم إِلى الشعور بألم شديد.
