تهدف المكملات الغذائية إلى تعزيز النظام الغذائي الصحي، وليس استبداله. إذا كنت تتمتع بصحة جيدة وتتناول مجموعة متنوعة من الأطعمة، فربما لن تحتاج إلى أخذ مكملات غذائية.

ومع ذلك قد تساعد الأطعمة المعززة والمكمِّلات الغذائية في بعض الأحيان على توفير عنصر أو أكثر من العناصر المغذية. على سبيل المثال، تُنصح النساء الحوامل أو اللاتي ترغبن في الحمل بأخذ فيتامينات ما قبل الولادة التي تحتوي على حمض الفوليك.

وقد يوصى بأخذ المكملات الغذائية في حال عدم تناول كمية كافية من الأطعمة الصحية أو عدم تنوع النظام الغذائي. أو قد تكون هناك حاجة إلى تناول المكملات الغذائية إذا كان لديك حساسية أو عدم تحمل لبعض الأطعمة أو كنت مصابًا بحالة مرَضية تستدعي منع أطعمة أو مجموعات أطعمة معينة. اتباع نظام غذائي صحي أمر بالغ الأهمية خاصة إذا كنت مُصابًا بمشكلة صحية.

تحدث إلى فريق الرعاية الصحية أو اختصاصي النُّظم الغذائية بشأن مدى ملاءمة المكملات الغذائية لحالتك. احرص على الاستفسار عن الآثار الجانبية المحتملة لأي مكمّل غذائي قد تأخذه. واستفسر كذلك عن احتمال تأثير المكمّلات الغذائية على الأدوية التي تواظب عليها.
