Varan Perananthan, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Varan Perananthan, M.D., Ph.D., is a Senior Associate Consultant Gastroenterologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He specializes in esophageal diseases, with a clinical and research focus on the endoscopic management of achalasia, advanced therapeutic luminal endoscopy, complex reflux disease and strictures, and Barrett’s esophagus.

His academic work focuses on clinical outcomes after peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), physiologic predictors of treatment response, and technology-driven innovations in endoscopy, including imaging analytics and novel device development. Dr. Perananthan has authored peer-reviewed publications, presented at international scientific meetings, and secured competitive research funding.

Dr. Perananthan earned his medical degree from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship training in gastroenterology and hepatology in Australia, followed by an advanced fellowship in esophageal diseases at Mayo Clinic in Rochester before joining the faculty.
