Biographical summary
Qingwen (Wen) Kawaji, M.D., M.S., is a vascular and endovascular surgeon in the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Kawaji cares for patients with a wide range of arterial and venous conditions. She has particular expertise in peripheral artery disease and chronic limb-threatening ischemia, and her practice emphasizes limb preservation, wound healing and multidisciplinary care. She also treats aortic aneurysms, aortic dissection and carotid artery disease. Depending on what is best for each patient, she uses minimally invasive endovascular techniques, open surgical reconstruction, or a combination of the two.
"Good vascular care starts with listening. Every patient has different goals, and vascular disease rarely affects just one part of a person's life. I work closely with each patient and their family, alongside other experts across Mayo Clinic, to create a plan that reflects their health, their priorities and the life they want to live."
Dr. Kawaji's research focuses on outcomes in peripheral arterial disease and aortic disease. She has written more than 20 peer-reviewed articles and several textbook chapters, and has given plenary
presentations at regional and national vascular surgery meetings. She is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and has received multiple teaching and research awards during her training.
Dr. Kawaji is committed to surgical education. She leads hands-on vascular skills labs for residents and physician assistants. Since 2022 she has been an editor and host for Audible Bleeding, a vascular surgery podcast, where she helps produce its author interview series with the Journal of Vascular Surgery.
She earned her undergraduate degrees in biomedical engineering and applied mathematics at Johns Hopkins University, and a master's degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She received her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. She completed her general surgery residency, including a year as chief resident, at MedStar Health Georgetown University in Baltimore, along with a surgical critical care fellowship at Johns Hopkins. She then completed a vascular surgery and endovascular therapy fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
