Caregiver Support Program

When someone is sick, it can affect the entire family system. Oftentimes, it requires a loved one to assume the role of caregiver, who plays a critical role during hospital stays and after discharge. Yet, a caregiver’s own needs are often overlooked or not met.

Using volunteers, the Caregiver Support Program provides supportive care specifically to family caregivers of patients at Mayo Clinic hospital. Caregiver Support volunteers are highly trained to provide peer and emotional support to caregivers by creating meaningful connections, engaging in supportive conversation and offering a non-judgmental ear. Volunteers can also help caregivers navigate the healthcare system and be a liaison for them within the hospital care team. If needed, volunteers can identify community resources that may be helpful to the caregiver.

Volunteer requirements

  • Volunteers must possess a strength in empathetic listening and emotional intelligence.
  • Related experience (i.e., hospice) would be helpful but is not required.
  • Although having experience as a family caregiver is not required to be a Caregiver Support volunteer, upon application for this program, you will interview with a Mayo Clinic social worker to ensure suitability to this position.
  • If accepted, Caregiver Support volunteers must commit to volunteering 3 to 4 hours once a week for a minimum of one year.
