Dr. Hanna serves as Quality Medical Director of Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension and Director of the Pediatric PKD Center of Excellence. He provides specialized care for children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease, including inherited and glomerular conditions such as polycystic kidney disease, cystinosis, and nephrotic syndrome. Dr. Hanna is dedicated to improving outcomes for children with kidney failure, glomerular disease, and congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT) across Rochester and surrounding areas.

Areas of expertise

Dr. Hanna combines advanced clinical expertise with innovation in pediatric nephrology to help children and families navigate complex kidney conditions.

  • Polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD, ARPKD): Comprehensive evaluation, monitoring, and management of children with autosomal dominant and recessive forms of PKD
  • Glomerular disease and nephrotic syndrome: Diagnosis and treatment of proteinuria and other glomerular disorders using evidence-based, child-focused approaches
  • Kidney failure and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD): Multidisciplinary care and long-term management options, including preparation for dialysis and transplant
  • Nephropathic cystinosis: Lifelong care coordination for children with this rare condition, focusing on renal health and overall well-being
  • Congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT): Diagnosis and care of congenital kidney malformations impacting kidney growth and function
  • Dialysis therapies: Expertise in hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) tailored for pediatric patients

Research and expertise

Dr. Hanna's research focuses on identifying early biomarkers and advancing treatment strategies for pediatric PKD. As part of the Mayo Translational Polycystic Kidney Disease Center, his work explores genotype — phenotype correlations, imaging innovations, and artificial intelligence applications in 3D ultrasound for PKD progression assessment. He is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology by the American Board of Pediatrics and serves as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

Personal note
