Elizabeth J. Carey, M.D.

Elizabeth J. Carey, M.D., is a gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. She specializes in liver transplantation and the diagnosis and treatment of complex acute and chronic liver diseases, with particular expertise in cholestatic liver disease, autoimmune liver disease and sarcopenia in liver disease.

Dr. Carey cares for patients with cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, viral hepatitis, hemochromatosis, Wilson disease, hepatic encephalopathy and other hepatobiliary disorders. She also evaluates and treats patients with biliary obstruction, Budd-Chiari syndrome, liver masses, liver tumors, metabolic liver disease and polycystic liver disease.

As a member of Mayo Clinic's Liver Transplant Program and Hepatobiliary Clinic, Dr. Carey works with a multidisciplinary team to provide individualized, evidence-based care for patients being evaluated for liver transplantation and for those managing complex liver disease before and after transplant.

Dr. Carey is board-certified in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She completed fellowship training in gastroenterology and hepatology through Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education in Arizona. She performs gastrointestinal procedures including colonoscopy and upper endoscopy.

In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Carey participates in liver disease research and professional activities related to primary biliary cholangitis. Her patient-care approach emphasizes coordinated specialty care, clear communication and treatment plans tailored to each patient's diagnosis, goals and long-term liver health.
