Orthopedics - EI92
This 26-bed unit with a linear design provides for adult, and occasional adolescent, patients with orthopedic problems. The patient population includes total joint replacements, reconstructive surgery, orthopedic oncology, and infected orthopedic cases with varying medical and surgical needs. Factors affecting the orthopedic cases are aging patients, availability of family support systems and varying degrees of self-care deficits. Important components of nursing care are increasing or maintaining independence, preventing skin breakdown and infection, managing acute and chronic pain, patient education, and discharge planning. This unit is designated as the resource unit for THA and TKA critical pathway patients.

Schedule options:

  • 8-hour rotating, every other weekend
  • 8/12 combination; work 8-hour shifts weekdays, with 12-hour shifts every third weekend

Orthopedics Surgery - EI51
This 24-bed unit with a linear design provides for adult urology and orthopedic patients. The most common urology surgeries are nephrectomies, radical retropubic prostatectomies and cystectomies with ileal conduit, and transurethral resection of the prostate. Orthopedic populations include patients having hand/foot surgery and shoulder/elbow joint replacement surgery.

Schedule options:

  • 8-hour rotating, every other weekend
  • 8/12 combination; work 8-hour shifts weekdays, with 12-hour shifts every third weekend
  • Weekday rotating 8-hour shifts, Saturday only every other weekend rotating patterns, and 12-hour every third weekend patterns

Orthopedic Surgery/Orthopedic Infectious Disease - EI91
This 24-bed unit with a linear design provides for adolescents and adult patients requiring orthopedic surgery. The patient population includes adult reconstruction total joint replacements, orthopedic oncology, and requiring various medical and surgical needs. Factors affecting the orthopedic patients are the aged population, availability of support systems, and varying degrees of self-care deficits. Important components of nursing care are maintaining increasing independence, preventing skin breakdown and infection, managing acute and chronic pain, patient education, and discharge planning. Clinical pathways are utilized for patients requiring total hip and knee orthoplastics multidisciplinary objectives while hospitalized.

Orthopedics Vascular Medicine - AI7E/JO7C
This is a 39-bed inpatient acute care orthopedic surgical unit whose primary population is trauma patients. It also takes care of spine patients, hand patients, a small percentage of total joint replacements, and some medical overflow patients. This unit is the designated spinal cord injury floor. Patients undergoing orthopedic procedures experience long-term alterations in their lifestyle. As discharge needs are assessed, it is recognized that many of the patients require support from community services such as public health nursing, visiting nurse services, or assistance with housekeeping and meal preparation. The nursing staff work with support staff (discharge planning coordinator, dietitian, physical therapist, clinical nurse specialist, nursing education specialist, and social services staff) to develop a plan of care that meets the needs of the patients and their significant others.
