Mayo Clinic doctors often inform eligible patients about opportunities to participate in research studies and clinical trials related to advancements in the treatment of breast cancer. Areas of research include: Analyzing the genetic makeup of breast cancer cells to understand how DNA changes affect response to cancer treatments and personalize treatment options. Harnessing the power of viruses to treat noninvasive breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer and metastatic breast cancer. Innovative breast imaging techniques, such as dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI, contrast-enhanced digital mammography and molecular breast imaging. Making treatment safer using new technology, such as proton beam therapy to shape radiation beams that reach left-sided breast cancer but spare the heart. Refinement of the list of genes that are involved in the development of breast cancer to improve the use of genetic testing. The patient comes first. So the mission and research here is to advance how we can best help the patient, how to make sure the patient comes first in care. So in many ways, it's a cycle. It can start with as simple as an idea worked on in a laboratory, brought to the patient bedside, and if everything goes right — and let's say it's helpful or beneficial — then brought on as a standard approach. And I think that is one of the unique characteristics of Mayo's approach to research — that patient-centeredness — that really helps to put it in its own spotlight.
