Research

Mayo Clinic cardiologists and cardiac surgeons research diagnostic tests and treatment options for aortic valve disease. Read more about research in the Cardiovascular Research Center.

Areas of research have included:

  • Imaging techniques to diagnose and monitor valve disease, including echocardiography, multidetector computerized tomography (MDCT) and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cardiac MRI)
  • Minimally invasive procedures to treat aortic valve disease, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and other catheter procedures
  • Outcomes of TAVR compared with those of open-heart surgery in people with different levels of surgical risk
  • 3D printing of models of the heart and valves that doctors may study to prepare to perform heart valve surgery
