Biographical summary
Hector I. Michelena, M.D., is a board-certified cardiologist with a special interest in heart valve diseases, structural heart diseases, diseases of the aorta and all echocardiographic modalities. He is heavily involved in clinical practice, research and education. His clinical focus includes:
- Diagnosis and management of all heart valve diseases and other structural heart diseases
- Diagnosis and management of diseases of the aorta
- Interventional and intra-operative echocardiography
In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Michelena is Director of Intra-Operative Echocardiography, and his research focuses on bicuspid aortic valve, aortopathy, aortic stenosis and regurgitation, mitral regurgitation and tricuspid regurgitation. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed papers and multiple book chapters. Dr. Michelena is a Mayo-recognized top educator and a nationally- and internationally-renowned speaker. Dr. Michelena is the American College of Cardiology U.S. chair for the ACC-Latin-American conference (2017, 2018), and is the U.S. vice-president of the Inter American Society of Cardiology (SIAC, 2017-2019).
