Interventional Pulmonology Overview Print People with lung and airway (pulmonary) or chest (thoracic) diseases benefit from the services of our interventional pulmonology specialists. They are expert in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including robotic bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, pleuroscopy and comprehensive evaluation of airway conditions. Our interventional pulmonology doctors work closely with a multispecialty team that includes thoracic surgeons, cancer (oncology) specialists, pathologists and other specialists as needed. Together they develop an individualized treatment plan for you that's based on the full range of options, comprehensive evaluation, accurate diagnosis, and your concerns and goals. Innovations in care Show transcript for video I pay a lot of attention to beauty, art, and nature. I can think about a song, something that I read last night in a book. I'm not just a scientist, but a human being. When we inhale, we bring in life. I feel the urge to restore the natural balance to cure people. We are able to navigate inside the lungs to wherever we want to go. So I think that I'm good at bringing a dream, an idea into action. I know we were able to get that patient better because there is usually a smile. As long as I have sense of purpose and hope I'm able to do what I was not able to do before. Our interventional pulmonologists are at the forefront of innovation in advanced diagnostic and treatment technology, such as robotic bronchoscopy. This breakthrough technique allows health care professionals to see and biopsy parts of the lung that were previously inaccessible. It offers better precision and control while biopsying nodules in or near the airway, and it has been proved to decrease the time from diagnosis to treatment. Another innovation in care used at Mayo Clinic is endoscopic lung volume reduction with endobronchial valves. This procedure is used to treat people experiencing problems related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Only a few centers nationwide offer this treatment.
