My name is William Hogan. I'm one of the hematologists here at Mayo Clinic. I predominately treat patients that have blood disorders, such as leukemias, and I also am head of the bone marrow transplant at Mayo.

When patients come to see me, usually they have a pretty serious or oftentimes very serious illness that can be life-threatening. They have questions about the diagnosis. What does this mean for me? How is this going to change my life? And I try to provide them with the answers to those questions and give them hope that there are treatment options that we can consider that can hopefully improve their situation and, many times, lead to a long-term cure.

I think my personal philosophy is one, to try and get to know the person. Two is try and see what their goals are. Three is try and bring the best treatments that we have available to bear on that. And four is to make sure that it's part of the partnership with family, the patient, and with the medical team. And so we try and do that for every patient every time.
