Biographical summary
John A. Stauffer, M.D., is a fellowship-trained hepatobiliary (HPB) and pancreas surgeon in the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He is also a professor of surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
Dr. Stauffer treats a range of diseases affecting the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, spleen, small bowel and other abdominal organs. He specializes in pancreatic and liver cancer surgery, using progressive, minimally invasive robotic or laparoscopic techniques to remove even the most complex tumors of the pancreas or liver.
"Many of our patients come to us after failed procedures or after they've been turned down for treatment elsewhere," says Dr. Stauffer. "Our high-volume experience from regularly
performing the Whipple procedure and major hepatectomy among other operations helps our patients to have successful outcomes. We want to make it as easy as possible for individuals to move forward with their lives following surgery. We take great pride in providing some of the lowest complication rates in the world despite performing the most complex operations."
A recipient of the John A. Beals Award for his outstanding cancer research, Dr. Stauffer studies ways to optimize pancreatic and metastatic cancer treatment and tumor removal. He has evaluated several surgical methods, including open, laparoscopic and robotic techniques and over 150 publications. Dr. Stauffer also has an extensive history of mentoring and teaching and has received the Faculty Teacher of the
Year Award at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
Dr. Stauffer earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine graduating with honors. He completed his residency in general surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, where he served as chief resident. He also received the Mayo Brothers Distinguished Fellowship Award. He then pursued a fellowship in minimally invasive and hepatobiliary surgery at Mayo Clinic
College of Medicine and Science.
Dr. Stauffer serves as a program director of the National Pancreas Foundation and on several innovation-driving committees at Mayo Clinic. He is also an active editor and reviewer of leading medical journals in his field. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, and the Society of American
Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
Dr. Stauffer grew up on a small-town dairy farm in Ohio, to which he attributes his practical and common-sense treatment recommendations, and he played college athletics which established to
him that highly functional teams can achieve much greater than an individual. Today, he and his family live in northeast Florida, where they enjoy a variety of activities including spending time on their farm outside of the city, boating in the Gulf gathering scallops, and watching college football.
