At Mayo Clinic, patient care is a collaborative effort among a team of specialists, each with a variety of skills. These medical professionals work together to evaluate and treat you. This means that you're not getting just one opinion — you benefit from the knowledge and experience of each specialist on the multidisciplinary team.

Close collaboration enables the team to have your test results available quickly and to coordinate scheduling your appointments. Evaluation and treatment can typically be done in a matter of days at Mayo Clinic.

This care includes:

  • A comprehensive evaluation of your heart condition as well as any other medical problems that affect your treatment. Your team will consult specialists in other areas, as needed, to make sure you receive the best possible treatment plan.
  • The latest diagnostic tools. At Mayo Clinic, heart imaging and other tests are evaluated by experienced heart specialists who are experts at interpreting the results. Mayo Clinic doctors have special expertise in performing diagnostic techniques including cardiac MRI, cardiac catheterization and echocardiography specifically for patients with HCM.
  • Genetic testing and counseling. Experienced genetic counselors and medical geneticists provide genetic counseling and testing for people with HCM and their families.
  • Expert heart surgery. Mayo Clinic has more than 50 years of experience in performing septal myectomy surgery, a procedure in which a cardiac surgeon removes part of the thickened heart muscle to improve blood flow. Septal myectomy surgery has been performed at Mayo Clinic since 1959, and surgeons at Mayo Clinic now perform nearly 250 myectomy procedures for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy each year. In a 2014 study, historical data of close to 2,200 patients showed that about 90 percent experienced improvement in symptoms and exercise capacity after septal myectomy for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and complication rates were 2 percent. Mayo Clinic surgeons also perform apical myectomy — removal of thickened heart muscle from near the tip of the heart — in some people.
  • Education and support. Nurses and other staff in the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Clinic, along with your cardiologist, will provide you with specialized educational material tailored to your condition. Being diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can cause a range of difficult emotions and your team will be ready to help you cope with this diagnosis.
