Andrew Hoel, M.D., is a vascular surgeon in the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery in Rochester, Minnesota where he serves as the Surgical Director of the Mayo Clinic Aortic Center. He treats the full spectrum of vascular disease with particular interest and expertise in the management of complex diseases of the aorta and its branches. Dr. Hoel is deeply committed to clinical care tailored to each patient's needs and he values effective and individualized communication with patients and their families.

Dr. Hoel (pronounced like "school") graduated from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and completed residency in general surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a Harvard teaching hospital, in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed additional fellowship training in vascular surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Prior to joining Mayo Clinic, Dr. Hoel was Associate Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. At Northwestern, Dr. Hoel served as the Director of the Aortic Program in Vascular Surgery and the Director of Outcomes and Quality Improvement for Vascular Surgery. He has had multiple leadership roles in the hospital and medical school and is the recipient of multiple mentorship and teaching awards.

Dr. Hoel's research interests are focused on the management of acute and chronic aortic disease including advancing technology and technique in open and endovascular aortic therapy. Additional research interests include risk evaluation for surgery, patient education and quality of life, and innovation in systems of care.

  • Aortic Surgery: Broad interest in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic disease of the aorta including aneurysm and dissection. Expertise in both minimally invasive (endovascular) and open surgical management of aortic disease.
  • Vascular Surgery: Extensive and broad experience in the management of acute and chronic problems that involve the circulation throughout the body including disease of the upper and lower extremities, the chest and abdomen, and the carotid arteries.
  • Multidisciplinary surgical care: Expertise in collaborative surgical care for complex disease involving arteries and veins including cancer, orthopedic and spine disease, trauma, and congenital disease.
