Justin T. Brady, M.D.

Justin T. Brady, M.D., is a board-certified, fellowship-trained colon and rectal surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, with particular expertise in organ preservation for rectal cancer. He serves as the Program Director for the Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship and Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency. His clinical practice includes caring for patients with colon and rectal cancer, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease and a range of anorectal conditions.

Dr. Brady has a special interest in rectal cancer treatment and approaches that preserve normal organ function whenever possible. His focus on minimally invasive surgery and organ preservation reflects an approach that considers both effective treatment and the patient's long-term quality of life. He helped develop the Multidisciplinary Rectal Cancer Clinic at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona that allows patients to be seen by Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Colorectal Surgery, all in one clinic visit. This allows patients to consolidate multiple appointments into one and to sit down in the same room with all of the specialists that will be involved in their rectal cancer care.

Dr. Brady believes that good surgical care should be centered on both the disease and the individual patient. "My goal is to help patients understand their diagnosis and feel confident in their treatment plan. When surgery is needed, I want to choose an approach that treats the disease effectively while preserving quality of life and helping patients return to the life they value."

His areas of clinical interest include colon and rectal cancer, diverticulitis, robotic surgery and transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS). He treats conditions including:

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Brady is involved in colorectal research, medical education and quality improvement. His research interests include outcomes research, minimally invasive surgery, rectal cancer and artificial intelligence. His recent publications have examined topics including financial toxicity following rectal cancer treatment, mutation specific treatment decision models in hereditary colorectal cancers and the impact of national accreditation standards for rectal cancer to improve patient outcomes.

Dr. Brady earned his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences and a bachelor's degree in animal physiology and neurosciences from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his general surgery residency at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and MetroHealth Medical Center through Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, followed by fellowship training in colon and rectal surgery at AdventHealth in Orlando, Florida. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Brady is an adventurous baker and enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids (who occasionally enjoy his kitchen creations).
