Biographical summary
Dr. Jeffrey R. Janus is currently the Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He is a board certified, fellowship trained, Head and Neck Oncologic and Reconstructive Surgeon. Dr. Janus trained at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Florida where he received entrance into the Junior Honors Medical Program, combining the last year of undergraduate training and the first year of medical school. He was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota from 2008-2019 as an Otolaryngologist, Head and Neck Surgeon. In early 2020, Dr. Janus transferred to Mayo Clinic Florida to continue his work. Dr. Janus's interests include:
- Thyroid Surgery — the removal of all or part of the thyroid gland to treat goiters, hyperthyroidism, nodules, or cancers of the thyroid. Dr. Janus does the full scope of thyroid surgery, from nodules to complex cancers with bilateral neck disease. His clinical focus is optimal voice outcomes with this surgery.
- Parathyroid Surgery — the removal of parathyroid glands in the context of primary, secondary, or tertiary hyperparathyroidism, as well as parathyroid cancers.
* Dr. Janus has achieved, and maintains, the American Board of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) Adult Complex Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery (ACTPS) Focused Practice Designation (FPD) Certification. This is a certification that requires a high volume of complex thyroid/parathyroid cases, advanced testing, participation in Endocrine tumor boards, and professional standing to obtain.
- Salivary tumor (Parotid Gland) Surgery with special focus on postoperative facial nerve function and aesthetics
- Robotic Surgery — the use of the surgical robot to remove tumors of the throat (oropharynx) and voice box (larynx)
- Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Clinic — this is a group of Head and Neck Surgeons, Radiation Oncologists, Medical Oncologists, Pathologists, Radiologists, and other staff who meet regularly at Mayo Clinic Florida to review complex cases and compose multidisciplinary treatment plans.
In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Janus is active in research and education, providing mentorship to residents and fellows. He sits on the executive board for Mayo Clinic Florida and is the acting Facilities Chair for the campus. He authors expert content and publishes in high-impact scientific journals and actively collaborates with the center for regenerative medicine and the cancer center.

- Microvascular Reconstruction — Free flap surgery, the use of tissue from one place in the body to rebuild a surgical defect at another, restoring preoperative form and function when possible.
- Parotid Surgery — Removal of benign and malignant parotid tumors, with special consideration postoperative facial nerve function and/or facial reanimation.
- Endocrine Surgery — The removal of parathyroid and thyroid tumor with focus voice preservation
- Robotic Surgery — The use of a small 3D camera and robotic arms to remove tumors of the upper aerodigestive tract (e.g. Oropharynx and/or throat cancer).
- Oral Cavity Cancer Surgery — Removal of tumors from the mouth, lips, cheek, jaw, and tongue with special consideration of reconstruction when needed, and restoration of preoperative speech and swallow when possible.
- Regenerative Medicine Research — The use of stem cells and tissue scaffolding to rebuild or repair natural structures in the head and neck.
