Sean C. Dowdy, M.D.

Sean C. Dowdy, M.D., FACS, FACOG, is Professor of Gynecologic Oncology, and a fellowship trained Gynecologic Oncologist specializing in ovarian, uterine, and cervical cancer and complex benign gynecologic surgery. He is board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology. Dr. Dowdy grew up in New Hampshire, completed a BA in English at Cornell University, a medical degree at Georgetown University, and residency and fellowship at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. He also completed a 6-month Mayo Scholar program in Lille, France, and Berlin, Germany, focusing on laparoscopic oncology.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Dowdy is the Chief Value Officer of Mayo Clinic and is the Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Associate Dean for Practice Transformation. In these roles he leads the strategy and execution for the Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery and Mayo Clinic Quality. He is a member of the Joint Commission CMO Council and co-leads the Learning Health System Initiative for the National Academy of Medicine. His current research focuses on improving healthcare quality, safety, and value. He serves on the Executive Committee of the NIH funded Mayo Clinic Ovarian SPORE within our Comprehensive Cancer Center, and has authored over 280 peer-reviewed publications, including the International Guidelines for Enhanced Recovered After Surgery, among the most downloaded publications in the journal Gynecologic Oncology. He is the former Chair of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology and has served on the Board of Directors for the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, ERAS USA, and the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons.
