Kenan W. Yount, M.D.

Dr. Kenan Yount is a cardiac surgeon in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He specializes in complex adult cardiac surgery with particular expertise in heart valve disease, structural heart disease and thoracic aortic surgery. He has performed more than 2,500 cardiac operations, including over 2,000 heart valve procedures, and participates in Mayo Clinic's multidisciplinary heart valve and structural team as well as its heart transplant team.

His subspecialty focus includes:

• Minimally invasive and open mitral valve repair and replacement.
• Aortic valve repair and replacement.
• Aortic root repair and reconstruction.
• Ascending aorta and aortic arch repair and reconstruction.
• Transcatheter therapies, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
• Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
• Septal myectomy.

Dr. Yount serves as Program Director of Mayo Clinic Florida's Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship training program. Before joining Mayo Clinic, he was an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, where he directed the Structural Heart & Valve Center and the Aortic Center. He earned his medical degree and M.B.A. at the University of Virginia and completed his integrated cardiothoracic surgery residency there, followed by advanced fellowship training in transcatheter heart valve therapies at Virginia, and minimally invasive mitral valve surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.

His research interests include heart valve disease, enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery, surgical outcomes and health policy and economics. He has served as principal investigator on an NIH-funded grant supporting large-scale clinical trial research and on the steering committee of the Cardiothoracic Surgical Trials Network.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and is a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, which recognized his research with its President's Award.

Dr. Yount is originally from Augusta, Georgia, and graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College, where he captained the golf team. Outside the operating room, he enjoys golf, skiing and spending time with his wife and kids.
