Biographical summary
Timothy Lyon, M.D., is a fellowship-trained urologic oncologist at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. His clinical practice focuses on the surgical management of genitourinary cancers, with a particular focus on non-muscle-invasive and muscle-invasive bladder cancer, including bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG)-unresponsive disease, bladder-preserving treatment strategies, and robotic-assisted radical cystectomy.
His expertise includes the multidisciplinary treatment of bladder cancer, utilizing advanced approaches such as intravesical therapy, blue light cystoscopy, robotic radical cystectomy with orthotopic neobladder reconstruction, and other forms of urinary diversion. He also specializes in the surgical management of kidney, prostate and testicular cancers using advanced robotic and open techniques.
"The most important part of my job is actually not the science or the treatment plans, but in caring for a patient who is facing a life-threatening or life-altering disease and helping them navigate the process," says Dr. Lyon. "When a patient comes here, they can rest assured they are going to have a care team with the expertise, resources and knowledge to give them the best care possible."
Dr. Lyon earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas, completed his urology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and a fellowship in urologic oncology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Lyon is actively involved in research focused on improving the care of patients with bladder cancer and other genitourinary malignancies. His work emphasizes surgical innovation, multidisciplinary cancer care and advances in health care delivery. He serves as Assistant Editor for the Journal of Urology, the official Journal of the American Urological Association and the most widely read and highly cited journal in the field.
He is an active clinical investigator for multiple clinical trials evaluating novel therapies for bladder cancer and other genitourinary malignancies through his work with the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is board-certified by the American Board of Urology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Lyon enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, staying active with a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, and tennis, and rooting for his hometown Kansas City Chiefs.
