Stroke telemedicine is a field requiring specialized and coordinated care. Mayo Clinic neurologists trained in blood vessel conditions (vascular neurologists), brain surgery (neurosurgeons), brain imaging (neuroradiologists) and those in stroke telemedicine centers work as a team with emergency health care providers and staff at remote sites.
Experience
Specialists at Mayo Clinic's campus in Arizona began participating in stroke telemedicine as a trial in 2007. Since then, telestroke experts at Mayo Clinic campuses in Arizona, Florida, Minnesota and Wisconsin assess and treat more than 2,200 patients annually at 28 remote hospital sites across six states.
Mayo Clinic's telestroke service provides telestroke care to 17 Mayo Clinic health system emergency departments and some inpatient units in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The service also is available at 11 non-Mayo Clinic sites in several states, including Arizona, Florida, Iowa and Pennsylvania. Participating sites receive rapid access to a Mayo Clinic stroke specialist for optimal and prompt care for people who recently have had a stroke.
Research
Our mission to find and share medical expertise means close contact with people working to discover better methods of caring for people who have had a stroke. Past research led to today's state-of-the-art stroke telemedicine network to help diagnose and treat strokes. Our commitment to expand knowledge for all stroke patients drives current research.
Expertise and rankings
Mayo Clinic's campuses in Florida and Minnesota are each certified as a comprehensive stroke center by The Joint Commission, a national organization that evaluates and accredits hospitals and staff. Mayo Clinic's campus in Arizona and Mayo Clinic Health System sites in Eau Claire, Wisconsin; La Crosse, Wisconsin; and Mankato, Minnesota are certified as primary stroke centers by The Joint Commission.
Mayo Clinic's campuses and Mayo Clinic Health System sites regularly receive achievement awards from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association's Get with the Guidelines - Stroke program by following evidence-based stroke treatment guidelines.
Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, Mayo Clinic in Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona, and Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, rank among the Best Hospitals for neurology and neurosurgery in the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings. Mayo Clinic Children's Center in Rochester is ranked the No. 1 hospital in Minnesota, and the five-state region of Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2023-2024 "Best Children's Hospitals" rankings.

Mayo Clinic works with hundreds of insurance companies and is an in-network provider for millions of people.
In most cases, Mayo Clinic doesn't require a physician referral. Some insurers require referrals or may have additional requirements for certain medical care. All appointments are prioritized on the basis of medical need.
