Biographical summary
Young M. Erben, M.D., is a board-certified, fellowship-trained vascular surgeon in the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. She is also an associate professor of surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
Dr. Erben specializes in treating complex aortic aneurysms, thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), median arcuate ligament syndrome and nutcracker syndrome. She performs a high volume of endovascular aneurysm repairs using physician-modified endografts, which are customized stent grafts, an extremely technical procedure to treat complex aortic aneurysms. As part of the nutcracker program at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Erben has deep expertise in surgically treating compressed blood vessels within the abdominal cavity.
"When I sit down with patients, the first thing I want to understand is what they’re feeling and what they hope to get back to," says Dr. Erben. "From there, we walk through their options together and decide on a plan that not only treats the vascular issue but also supports the quality of life they want, so they can return to the activities and routines that matter most to each and every patient."
Dr. Erben has been named one of America’s Leading Doctors in Vascular Surgery by Newsweek magazine and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. These honors are a testament to her commitment to quality and compassionate vascular care and education. She is also an award-winning researcher focused on cardiovascular disease management, outcomes, quality improvement and initiatives to eliminate gender disparities in care.
Dr. Erben has authored many peer-reviewed manuscripts and is associate editor for Annals of Vascular Surgery, Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery and Journal of Surgical Research. Additionally, she educates the next generation of vascular surgeons through extensive mentorship, teaching, hands-on training and committee involvement.
She actively supports women in medicine, serving as course director for Advancing Academic Career Excellence for Women at Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development. She also serves as a faculty sponsor for the Mayo Clinic in Florida chapters of the American Medical Women’s Association and the Association of Women Surgeons.
After earning her medical degree from Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany, Dr. Erben completed a general surgery residency and vascular surgery fellowship at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a long-standing member of several professional societies, including the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), Florida Vascular Society (FVS) and the American Venous Forum (AVF).
Outside the office, Dr. Erben enjoys days at the beach and spending time with her husband and daughter.
