close video

My name is Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, I'm the Mayo Professor of Neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic in Florida. I have been working for over 18 years in the field of brain surgery. I get to see some of the most complex brain tumors you can possibly imagine, and these are tumors that are considered many times to be inoperable. The way that I think about a diagnosis and a treatment plan is, I look at the patient, I look at what the patient has. I don't just concentrate on the films, I don't just concentrate on the disease, I concentrate on the patient, and I try to tailor my treatment to what the patient needs. The most important thing for me about my interaction with the patients, is the fact that I consider to be a privilege. The fact that they allow me to take care of them every single day, and to me that is a gift that I take very seriously. It allows me to give them my best, not only as a surgeon, but also as a human being, and more importantly, as a physician that cares for them.

Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, M.D., is a consultant and serves as chair of the Department of Neurologic Surgery at Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida, and he is recognized with the distinction of a named professorship, the William J. and Charles H. Mayo Professorship. His clinical focus includes:

  • Surgical treatment of primary and metastatic brain tumors with emphasis in motor and speech mapping during surgery
  • Pituitary tumors and skull base tumors using transsphenoidal endonasal and minimally invasive approaches
  • Providing personalized medicine to improve patient outcomes

In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Quinones-Hinojosa leads NIH-funded research to find a cure for brain cancer. His cutting-edge research focuses on brain tumors and cell migration, health care disparities and clinical outcomes for neurosurgical patients in which the operating room is used as an extension for his research scenario. He has authored numerous high-impact scientific journal articles, chapters, abstracts and books.

Dr. Quinones-Hinojosa also continues to provide mentorship to residents, graduate students and fellows.

Clinical

  • Practice focuses on the surgical treatment of primary and metastatic brain tumors, with an emphasis on motor and speech mapping during surgery and in the treatment of patients with pituitary tumors and minimal invasive approaches of skull base tumors

Research

  • Research focuses on brain tumors and stem cell migration, healthcare disparities for minorities and clinical outcomes for neurosurgical patients
  • Major research accomplishments include:
    • Elucidating mechanisms by which brain tumors migrate
    • Integrating the use of mesenchymal stem cells into local treatment of solid tumors
    • Concomitant use of nanotechnology and focal beam radiotherapy in the systemic treatment of solid tumors
    • Development of new imaging software to help identify areas within solid tumors with the greatest malignant potential
    • Development of innovative, minimally invasive approaches to brain tumor resection
