Research

A team of Mayo Clinic researchers discuss advancements in esophageal cancer research.

Mayo Clinic doctors and scientists participate in an extensive research program related to esophageal cancer. Focuses of esophageal cancer research include:

  • Understanding the genetic and environmental causes of esophageal cancer and of Barrett's esophagus, and addressing quality-of-life issues following esophagectomy through the Esophageal Adenocarcinoma and Barrett's Esophagus (EABE) Registry Consortium
  • Improving current diagnostic and treatment options
  • Developing alternative postoperative management systems that decrease complications and length of hospital stays
  • Testing new ways to use drugs known to be effective against esophageal cancer and investigating the best combinations of chemotherapy and radiation therapy
  • Improving surgical techniques in esophagectomy

Cancer research is conducted in coordination with the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center. Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center receives funding from the National Cancer Institute and is designated as a comprehensive cancer center — recognition for an institution's scientific excellence and multidisciplinary resources focused on cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
