Janani S. Reisenauer, M.D., is a thoracic surgeon and interventional pulmonologist with a special interest in minimally invasive approaches to treating lung cancer, including early identification. Her approach to care is patient-centered and personalized, and she is dedicated to optimizing post-surgical care, improving patient experience, satisfaction and overall outcome. She is the Vice-Chair for Innovation in the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Her clinical focus includes:

  • Treatment of lung cancer
  • Thoracic and cardiothoracic surgery, esophageal cancer, lung cancer, minimally invasive lung surgery and robotic lung surgery
  • Early identification of lung cancer, biopsy techniques and advanced bronchoscopic therapeutic techniques
  • Patient-focused directive for practice efficiency and quality metrics and optimization of post-surgical experience and outcomes for complex surgeries
  • Innovations in health care, including quality care in the operating room as well as postoperatively

Dr. Reisenauer earned her medical degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She completed her general surgery residency and cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. She is the first thoracic surgeon to complete the interventional pulmonary medicine fellowship as a path to board certification.

In addition to her clinical activities, Dr. Reisenauer is an active leader in research and education. She is currently exploring initiatives within AI, digital surgery, new surgical device development and telemedicine. She is involved in an industry-sponsored trial evaluating the role of a new robotic bronchoscope and additional trials involving endoscopic therapeutic interventions in the lung. She has been awarded an internal benefactor grant to evaluate enhanced imaging in the operating room in conjunction with robotic bronchoscopy. She authors expert content and publishes in high-impact scientific journals.
