Biographical summary
Dr. Rodrigo Bayon is a head and neck cancer surgeon and Division Chair of Head and Neck Surgery, specializing in the treatment of complex head and neck cancers and advanced reconstructive surgery. He completed his medical degree at the University of South Florida, followed by a five-year residency in Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago. He further advanced his expertise through fellowship training in Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, where he developed specialized skills in treating serious or complex head and
neck conditions.
Dr. Bayon's clinical focus includes minimally invasive transoral robotic surgery (TORS) and microvascular reconstructive surgery to treat head and neck cancer. His approach goes beyond removing cancer with precision — he is deeply focused on restoring essential functions such as speaking, swallowing, and appearance. This dual focus on cancer control and functional recovery helps patients regain
quality of life and confidence following treatment.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Bayon served as an Associate Professor at the University of Iowa, where he also held leadership roles in fellowship training for head and neck oncology and reconstructive surgery. His work reflects a long-standing commitment to advancing surgical innovation, mentoring future surgeons, and improving outcomes for patients facing complex diagnoses.
Known for his thoughtful and collaborative approach, Dr. Bayon works closely with each patient and their family to develop a personalized care plan. He prioritizes clear communication and compassionate support to ensure patients feel informed, respected, and confident throughout every stage of their care journey. In his words, "I care for every patient as if they were a member of my own family, ensuring they feel respected, heard, and supported."
Outside of medicine, Dr. Bayon enjoys running, listening to music and playing musical instruments, and spending time with his wife and three children.
