Can vitamin C improve your mood?

A healthy diet, including foods high in vitamin C, may boost mood and support the immune system and overall health.

People with low vitamin C levels, called vitamin C deficiency, may have symptoms such as fatigue and depression. Some studies also show that people who have healthy levels of vitamin C may have fewer symptoms of depression. Depression is more common in people with ongoing deficiency and very low levels of vitamin C, called scurvy. Scurvy is rare in areas where fruits and vegetables are available throughout the year.

Even people who do not have a vitamin C deficiency may find that eating foods high in vitamin C boosts their mood and offers other health benefits.

Most people can get enough vitamin C each day from food or drinks. Eating fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C helps naturally increase your levels. Some people may take a supplement. But talk with your healthcare professional before taking any supplement.

Most adults typically need 75 to 90 mg of vitamin C a day. Your daily total should not be more than 2,000 mg. Recommended amounts may be different for children and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk with your healthcare professional about what is right for you or your child.

Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C include:

  • Citrus and other fruits such as oranges, grapefruit and kiwis.
  • Vegetables such as bell peppers, broccoli, red cabbage and parsley.

Researchers continue to study the benefits of vitamin C for mood, wellness and overall health.
