Research

With state-of-the-art research facilities, Mayo Clinic doctors and scientists are studying new ways to understand and treat kidney disease.

Areas being explored by Mayo Clinic researchers include:

  • Factors that worsen kidney damage in chronic kidney disease.
  • Reasons for higher risk of heart and blood vessel complications in people with chronic kidney disease.
  • Calcium deposits in the blood vessels in the heart.
  • High blood pressure and chronic kidney disease.
  • Kidney disease and chronic liver disease.

In addition, the Mayo Nephrology Collaborative Group is a consortium of nephrologists at Mayo Clinic and at other healthcare facilities. Nephrologists are doctors who specialize in kidney diseases. The Mayo Nephrology Collaborative Group brings together these clinicians and scientists to develop and conduct research studies aimed at treating people with kidney diseases.
