Byron C. May, M.D.

  1. Radiation Oncologist

Dr. Byron May is a radiation oncologist at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, specializing in the treatment of prostate cancer, thyroid cancer, head and neck cancers, and other complex malignancies.

He provides comprehensive, personalized cancer care using advanced radiation therapy techniques, with expertise in intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), proton therapy and other advanced particle therapies.

Dr. May is committed to developing individualized treatment plans that reflect each patient's diagnosis, overall health and personal goals.

He has a particular interest in caring for older adults with cancer, recognizing that successful treatment extends beyond disease management to preserving quality of life and supporting informed, shared decision-making.

By taking time to understand each patient's experiences, priorities, and values, he works collaboratively to determine the most appropriate balance between effective cancer treatment and minimizing treatment-related side effects.

Dr. May's clinical practice emphasizes compassionate communication, multidisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based care, ensuring patients and their families are supported throughout every stage of treatment.

"I truly enjoy meeting new patients, particularly elderly ones with so many life experiences to share during our cancer journey together," says Dr. May. "Patients' life stories help me relate to them on a personal level and ultimately design treatment plans that match better to their goals of care. I seek each patient's participation to find the right balance of cancer-directed intervention aggressiveness versus toxicity (side effects) for him or her."

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. May is dedicated to advancing the field of radiation oncology through continual adoption of innovative technologies that improve precision, safety, and patient outcomes.

Outside of medicine, he enjoys playing golf as a way to relax and recharge.
