Ryan C. Augustin, M.D.

The clinical and research focus of Ryan C. Augustin, M.D., is the care of patients with gastroesophageal cancers and melanoma and the development of biomarker-informed strategies to overcome immunotherapy resistance. Dr. Augustin is a Mayo Clinic medical oncologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine and Oncology. His research examines tumor-intrinsic mechanisms of immune exclusion, including molecular programs associated with immune-cold gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma, drivers of resistance in acral melanoma, and the use of digital pathology and machine learning to predict melanoma recurrence. His work has been supported by the Conquer Cancer Foundation/ASCO Young Investigator Award, the Melanoma Research Scholars program and Mayo Clinic funding. He has published in leading oncology journals, including the Journal of Clinical Oncology, NEJM Evidence, the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer, Clinical Cancer Research and Cancer.

Education is also central to Dr. Augustin’s academic work. He previously served as chief resident in internal medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and as chief fellow in Mayo Clinic’s Hematology/Oncology Fellowship, where he received the program’s Outstanding Fellow Award. His educational work focuses on reincorporating adult-learning theory into oncology curricula and evaluating how artificial intelligence can serve as cognitive scaffolding for trainees. Through Mayo Clinic’s Automation, Innovation, and Transformation in Oncology working group, he is helping develop an AI-focused curriculum encompassing large language models, clinical workflow automation, data science and emerging research tools. He also develops and studies case-based, AI-integrated educational models designed to strengthen clinical reasoning and support practical decision-making in oncology.
