A tracheostomy is a surgically created hole, also called a stoma, in your windpipe, also known as your trachea. This hole allows air to pass into your windpipe to help with breathing when the usual way of breathing is blocked or reduced. A tracheostomy tube is inserted through the hole and secured in place with a strap around your neck.
