  1. Surgical Oncologist

Sanjay P. Bagaria, M.D., is a board-certified surgical oncologist and Professor of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, where he serves as Chair of the Division of Surgical Oncology. He specializes in the surgical treatment of complex and advanced cancers. His expertise spans sarcoma, peritoneal surface malignancies, melanoma, breast cancer, neuroendocrine tumors and other rare cancers.

Dr. Bagaria has particular expertise in complex abdominal surgery for sarcoma and in cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), an advanced treatment approach for select patients whose cancer has spread within the abdominal cavity. He works within Mayo Clinic's multidisciplinary cancer program, collaborating with medical and radiation oncologists, pathologists and other specialists to develop individualized treatment plans.

Dr. Bagaria's areas of expertise include:

  • Sarcoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST)
  • Gastrointestinal and abdominal cancers, including colon, appendix and small bowel cancers
  • Peritoneal surface malignancies and mesothelioma
  • Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC
  • Melanoma and Merkel cell carcinoma
  • Neuroendocrine tumors and adrenal cancer
  • Breast cancer and sentinel lymph node biopsy

Dr. Bagaria takes a patient-centered approach to complex cancer care, recognizing that treatment decisions are highly personal and often involve difficult choices. He focuses on understanding each patient's goals and concerns, clearly explaining treatment options and helping patients make informed decisions alongside their care team.

"Cancer treatment is deeply personal," says Dr. Bagaria. "I want to understand the person behind the diagnosis, explain the options clearly and work together to find a treatment plan that fits the patient's goals and offers the best path forward."

In addition to his clinical and academic roles, Dr. Bagaria leads initiatives focused on advancing healthcare through artificial intelligence, digital health innovation, and new models of care delivery.

Dr. Bagaria is also involved in research and academic medicine, with a focus on advancing surgical approaches for complex malignancies and intraperitoneal therapies such as HIPEC. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, secured patents, and lectured nationally and internationally on surgical oncology and healthcare innovation. His work reflects Mayo Clinic's commitment to translating advances in cancer research into innovative, multidisciplinary patient care.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Bagaria enjoys going to the beach, playing tennis and spending time with family.
