Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:


  1. Shortness of breath or trouble in breathing

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:

More common

  1. Unusual tiredness or weakness

Less common

  1. Blood in urine
  2. difficult urination
  3. mental depression
  4. pain in lower back
  5. pain or burning while urinating
  6. sudden decrease in amount of urine


  1. Bloody or black, tarry stools
  2. clumsiness or unsteadiness
  3. convulsions (seizures)
  4. darkening of urine
  5. fever
  6. hives, itching of skin, skin rash, or sores
  7. pale stools
  8. ringing or buzzing in the ears
  9. sore throat
  10. trembling
  11. unusual bruising or bleeding
  12. yellow eyes or skin

Symptoms of too much potassium loss

  1. Dryness of mouth
  2. increased thirst
  3. irregular heartbeats
  4. mood or mental changes
  5. muscle cramps or pain
  6. nausea or vomiting
  7. unusual tiredness or weakness
  8. weak pulse

Also, check with your doctor if you have any changes in your vision (especially problems with seeing faraway objects) when you first begin taking this medicine.

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More common

  1. Diarrhea
  2. general feeling of discomfort or illness
  3. increase in frequency of urination or amount of urine (rare with methazolamide)
  4. loss of appetite
  5. metallic taste in mouth
  6. nausea or vomiting
  7. numbness, tingling, or burning in hands, fingers, feet, toes, mouth, lips, tongue, or anus
  8. weight loss

Less common or rare

  1. Constipation
  2. dizziness or lightheadedness
  3. drowsiness
  4. feeling of choking or lump in the throat
  5. headache
  6. increased sensitivity of eyes to sunlight
  7. loss of taste and smell
  8. nervousness or irritability
