Scientists in the Department of Clinical Genomics-Research at Mayo Clinic research a wide range of diseases and conditions that have a genetic basis. They do this research to help improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Researchers in the Transplant Research Center are actively engaged in studying improved surgical procedures, and developing new antirejection medicines, treatments and techniques to make transplants safer and available to more people. Scientists in the Epidemiology and Genetics of Lung Cancer Research Program at Mayo Clinic are working to discover more about the genetic causes of lung cancer. They also are working to improve early detection and understand the genomic and environmental factors that significantly impact the development, progression and prognosis of lung cancer in people who have never smoked. You may have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. PublicationsSee a list of publications about AATD by Mayo Clinic doctors on PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine. The patient comes first. So the mission and research here is to advance how we can best help the patient, how to make sure the patient comes first in care. So in many ways, it's a cycle. It can start with as simple as an idea worked on in a laboratory, brought to the patient bedside, and if everything goes right — and let's say it's helpful or beneficial — then brought on as a standard approach. And I think that is one of the unique characteristics of Mayo's approach to research — that patient-centeredness — that really helps to put it in its own spotlight.
