Stages

If you're found to have bone cancer, often the next step is to find out the extent of the cancer. This is called the cancer's stage. Your healthcare team uses your cancer's stage to help create your treatment plan. To determine the stage of the cancer, the healthcare team considers:

  • The cancer's location.
  • The size of the cancer.
  • How fast the cancer is growing.
  • Whether there is more than one area of tumor in the same bone.
  • Whether the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes or to other parts of the body.

While staging may vary depending on tumor type and location, in general, the stages of bone cancer range from 1 to 4.

  • Stage 1. The cancer generally is small, confined to the bone and growing slowly.
  • Stage 2. The cancer remains confined to the bone but is growing more aggressively.
  • Stage 3. More than one area of the same bone is affected.
  • Stage 4. The cancer has spread beyond the bone to the lymph nodes or to other parts of the body.
