Overview

Your health is not a single symptom. It is your whole story — your hormones, your history, your body and your life. At Mayo Clinic's Women's Health Internal Medicine practice in Arizona, we take the time to understand all of it.

We provide consultative care for women with complex or ongoing health concerns. Whether you are navigating perimenopause in your 40s, managing polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) in your 20s or looking for answers to concerns that have not been fully explained, we are here to help.

What is consultative care?

The Women's Health Internal Medicine team at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona, provides consultative care. This means we work with your primary healthcare professional and gynecologist — not in place of them.

Many patients come to us when symptoms affect more than one area of health, when treatments have not helped or when they want a second opinion. We listen to your concerns, review your health history and offer expert guidance to help you understand your options and make informed decisions about your care.

We recommend having a primary healthcare professional before or soon after your visit. Your primary healthcare professional supports your long-term health, while we focus on specialized evaluation and short-term treatment when needed. This may include prescribing medicine, such as hormone therapy, for a limited time.

After your visit, your primary healthcare professional helps carry your treatment plan forward, so your care continues in a way that fits your needs. If you don't have a primary health professional, we can help you find one. If you have new or urgent symptoms, we recommend contacting your primary healthcare professional.

What to expect at your visit

At your first visit, you will meet with a women's health specialist for up to 60 minutes to discuss your symptoms, health history, concerns and goals.

Together, you'll develop a plan for your care. This may include testing, referrals to other specialists, treatments and lifestyle guidance. When needed, we help arrange next steps, such as scheduling recommended tests or appointments.

We also share your care plan with your primary healthcare professional who will help support your treatment and follow-up moving forward.

Are we gynecologists?

We are not gynecologists. We are internal medicine healthcare professionals who focus on health conditions that affect women, especially hormone-related and complex medical concerns.

We work closely with your gynecologist when needed, so your care is coordinated and connected and you feel supported at every step.

Your women's health care team

Your care team may include doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and pharmacists. Residents, fellows, and medical or pre-medical students also may be part of your team, working under direct supervision. This is consistent with Mayo Clinic's commitment to training the next generation of women's health specialists.
