Important collection and return information

  • Ship specimen(s) on the same day you collect them. Some specimens require testing within 48 hours of collection.
  • Best collection days are Monday through Thursday to avoid weekend delivery.
  • Best time to collect is in the morning to support same-day shipping.
  • Avoid collecting before a holiday or on a holiday to reduce shipping delays.
  • Provide all information requested in the instructions. Missing information will result in test cancellation.
  • Follow return temperature instructions. Specimens outside of temperature will result in test cancellation.

  1. Where can I get dry ice?
    Search online using the phrase "dry ice for purchase near me." You also may try contacting your local supermarket or fire equipment supply store.

  2. I searched for dry ice and I still cannot find it. What should I do?
    Contact a member of your healthcare team and inform that person that you aren't able to find dry ice.

  3. Will I be billed if the test is not completed successfully?
    Billing occurs when a test is complete and successfully resulted.

  4. Is it OK for me to collect my specimen while taking certain medicines?
    Talk with your healthcare team about your current medicines to find out whether it's OK to collect your specimen while taking them.

  5. Do I have to collect my specimen on a specific date?
    Please speak with your healthcare team about specific collection dates as these vary for different tests and for different healthcare professionals.

  6. What should I do if I need a second container when collecting my 24-hour urine specimen?
    There are two options:
    • If you have not started your collection, please call Remote Laboratory Services at 507-538-5768 and we will send you another collection container.
    • If you have started your collection, you can use any clean nonmetal container (such as a plastic detergent bottle or milk jug) to continue your collection. Please make sure you measure and record the total volume of urine collected in each container.

  7. I cannot find a facility that will collect my blood.
    Please call Remote Laboratory Services at 507-538-5768 for help.

  8. Can I return my urine specimen to a Mayo Clinic drop-off location rather than mailing it back?
    Yes. You can deliver the urine specimen in person. See the drop-off locations and hours in the timed 24-hour urine kit instructions.

  9. I contacted FedEx and they are unable to pick up my specimen today. Can I drop it off at a FedEx location?
    Yes, you may drop off at a FedEx location. Drop the package off as early in the day as possible to ensure the package is shipped out the same day.

  10. Can I use an alternative shipping method to return my specimen?
    No. An alternative shipping method may cause delays and test cancellation. Please use the provided return label.

  11. The facility doing the blood draw will not ship my package. Can I take it to a FedEx location?
    Yes. Follow the return packaging instructions and drop off the package at a FedEx location.
