Joseph Cheung, M.D., is a sleep medicine specialist in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He specializes in treating a wide range of sleep disorders, including, but not limited to: sleep apneas; snoring; narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia, circadian rhythm sleep wake disorders, parasomnia and restless legs syndrome. Prior to medical school, he had training in genetics/genomics under Dr. Stephen Scherer at the Centre for Applied Genomics at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. He then earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont in Burlington, where he also obtained a Master of Science in neuroscience. He went on to complete his internal medicine internship and neurology residency at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis at Barnes Jewish Hospital. During residency, he received the Abdullah M. Nassief Award for his dedication in teaching, compassion and clinical service. Dr. Cheung then completed his sleep medicine fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, California, where he also completed a sleep research fellowship under Dr. Emmanuel Mignot. Dr. Cheung is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in neurology and sleep medicine. His current research interest focuses on lifestyle modification, particularly with optimizing diet, in sleep disorders. He is highly committed to teaching and mentoring trainees.
