John B. Kisiel, M.D.

John Benjamin Kisiel, M.D., AGAF, is a gastroenterologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, who provides care for patients around the world with gastrointestinal cancers, precancerous conditions, and complex inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Kisiel specializes in cancer prevention and early detection strategies, with an emphasis on risk assessment and surveillance for individuals with hereditary and acquired GI cancer syndromes. Through his multidisciplinary approach, he partners with patients and families to provide evidence-based care tailored to reducing cancer risk and improving outcomes. Dr. Kisiel is a Professor of Medicine and serves as Associate Chair for Research in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic. His work integrates clinical care, education, and research to advance innovation in cancer interception and early detection technologies.

Research and expertise

Dr. Kisiel directs a robust translational research program focused on molecular biomarkers for early cancer detection and surveillance. His work has advanced noninvasive testing strategies into clinical practice and diagnostic platforms for colorectal, liver, and esophageal cancers, earning continuous support from the National Cancer Institute, including an R37 MERIT Award. He has led more than 80 clinical protocols and international collaborations, with expertise in methylated DNA biomarkers, next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics, and multi-cancer early detection platforms. Dr. Kisiel also plays a key mentorship role and has developed innovative curricula for gastroenterology education and cancer screening best practices.
