David M.H. Chascsa, M.D.

David M.H. Chascsa, M.D., is a gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. He is board-certified in gastroenterology, transplant hepatology and obesity medicine. His clinical practice focuses on liver transplantation, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD and MASH), weight management in patients with liver disease and Fontan-associated liver disease related to congenital heart disease.

Dr. Chascsa cares for patients with fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, portal hypertension, esophageal varices, hepatic encephalopathy, alcohol-, drug- or toxin-associated liver disease, viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis and liver cancer. He provides care for patients being considered for liver transplantation and for those who have undergone transplant.

A central part of Dr. Chascsa's practice is helping patients with overweight or obesity and fatty liver disease improve their liver and overall health. His clinic incorporates nutrition support, individualized weight-loss strategies and medical therapies, including approved weight-loss medications when appropriate. This expertise also supports patients whose weight may affect liver transplant eligibility or post-transplant health.

Dr. Chascsa has a special interest in Fontan-associated liver disease and other liver conditions related to congenital heart disease. He works with the congenital heart disease team at Phoenix Children's Hospital and collaborates with Mayo Clinic's adult congenital heart disease team to help patients transition from pediatric to adult hepatology care.

Dr. Chascsa is an assistant professor of medicine and serves as program director of the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship. He completed medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine, internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado, gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship training through the University of Maryland and National Institutes of Health, and transplant hepatology fellowship training at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. His research focuses on increasing access to liver transplantation. He performs colonoscopy, esophagoscopy and variceal band ligation, and his patient-centered approach has been recognized with Mayo Clinic patient experience awards.
