Afsaneh Alavi, M.D., is a Professor of Dermatology in Rochester, Minnesota. Her clinical and research interests include wound healing, inflammatory skin conditions, and hidradenitis suppurativa.

Her clinical focus includes:

  • Hidradenitis suppurativa
  • Pyoderma gangrenosum
  • Neutrophilic and inflammatory bowel disease related skin presentations
  • Severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions
  • Management of chronic inflammatory wounds

Dr. Alavi currently serves as the Director of the Medical Dermatology Fellow at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. She has received numerous honors, including the Practitioner of the Year Award from the Canadian Dermatology Association (2017), the Hidradenitis Suppurative Research Award from the HSF Foundation (2019), and the Supervisor of the Year Award from the Mayo Clinic Department of Dermatology (2022). 

Dr. Alavi was also the principal investigator of several clinical trials focused on inflammatory skin conditions. She has authored multiple book chapters and peer-reviewed papers, and has been published in high-impact scientific journals.

After completing her dermatology residency in Iran (1997) and Canada (2011), Dr. Alavi completed a two-year fellowship in Wound Healing and a Master of Science in Community Health at the University of Toronto.
