Biographical summary
Luke S. Spencer-Gardner, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida, where he is dedicated to helping active individuals and athletes return to the activities they enjoy. He specializes in the surgical treatment of the hip, with a clinical focus on open and arthroscopic hip preservation and direct anterior hip replacement in both primary and revision settings.
Dr. Spencer-Gardner is a high-volume hip specialist who has performed thousands of procedures, including advanced hip arthroscopy and reconstructive techniques designed to preserve native joint function and delay or prevent the need for total hip replacement.
He cares for patients aged 14 and older, ranging from young athletes striving to compete at a high level to older adults managing arthritis. He also works closely with the Nemours Children's Health Orthopedics program to provide collaborative, multidisciplinary care for pediatric and adolescent patients when appropriate.
He has particular expertise in the evaluation and treatment of a broad spectrum of hip conditions, including hip dysplasia, femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), labral tears, early and degenerative hip arthritis, avascular necrosis, periarticular tendon injuries involving the gluteal tendons, ischiofemoral impingement, failed prior hip surgery or hip replacement including psoas impingement, and hip fractures. His approach is highly individualized, emphasizing joint-preserving strategies tailored to each patient's anatomy, activity level, and long-term goals.
Many patients seek his care for his expertise in the anterior approach to total hip replacement, a muscle-sparing technique that can support a more efficient recovery. He also performs both open and arthroscopic procedures for the treatment of hip dysplasia and hip impingement.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Spencer-Gardner is an active contributor to the orthopedic literature, with numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters focused on hip preservation and hip replacement surgery, and he has presented nationally and internationally. As a former athlete, he brings a deep appreciation for the physical and mental demands of competitive sport, shaped by his experience competing at the world junior level with the Australian Junior Men's National Basketball Team and serving as team captain during his collegiate basketball career.
"Hip problems can be life-changing, affecting not only sport and exercise but also the simple daily activities many people rely on," says Dr. Spencer-Gardner. "I provide
advanced, comprehensive orthopedic care for patients with hip pain and injury. My goal is to understand each patient's situation and help restore function so they can safely and enjoyably return to the activities that matter most to them."
Outside of medicine, Dr. Spencer-Gardner and his wife are parents to four children who stay active in basketball, flag football, football, golf, and volleyball. His wife serves as the Head Coach of Varsity Girls Basketball at a local high school, where she has led the team to multiple district championships, a regional title, and an appearance in the FHSAA Class 6A State Final Four.
